Setting Up Your Niche Website

Read the previous steps here:
Step1
Step2
Step3
Step4

Now I have created two website templates that you can use or you can create your own. Both ways will work just fine. You can download the niche website template here.

Zip file includesThe picture to your right shows the files included in the zip file. You will notice that there are all the files you will need but you will have to make some changes to fit your chosen niche.

I’ve created a brown template and a white template (see in folder called “white”).

You will need to create a header to suit your niche, add niche keyword pages, add your content, change affiliate pictures and of course change the htm files where necessary. Now I won’t go into all the details on how to do that because that would simply take to long. If you don’t know how to do graphics or you don’t know how to write html, try asking friends and family for help. If you don’t know anybody that will be able to help you then you might need to A) Learn it yourself or B) Hire someone to do it for you.

This is what the site looks like without any changes to it:

Standard template layout

You will find Photoshop PSD files for both the header and the affiliate product in the zip file. Not that you’ll need it. How many modifications you want to do is up to you and from now on I will not spend that much time on building the site as I will on promoting the site to make it rank better in the search engines and to attract traffic to it.

After modifying the template this is what I came up with. The sites still needs some adjustments and some additions of text but other than that it is almost finished. Besides spending time on getting traffic I will also spend some time testing the performance of the site and try to improve upon it.

Present HorseTrailerUniverse look

As you can see I haven’t found any good affiliate products yet but I will add them as soon as I find them.

In the next article I will discuss how you can start building links and generating traffic to your site.

How to Setup a NamesCheap Domain on Hostgator

I would like to start by apologizing for not posting this post sooner but now it is here. This is actually part four in my little niche website test. Here is what I’ve covered so far:

Pointing the DNS to HostGator
Now that you have your domain from NameCheap and your hosting account from Hostgator, you will need to login to your NameCheap account to change your DNS settings. You will need the DNS information you got from the HostGator Welcome email when you bought the account. You DNS information should look something like ns1.hostgator.com.

Manage Domains ScreenshotIn your NameCheap account click Manage Domains and then click the domain you want to change the DNS for. Your will see a left side menu that looks something like the picture on the right.

Now the picture is taken from my account but you will have something that looks similar to the one called “Transfer DNS Back to US”.

After clicking on that link you can enter the DNS addresses you got from your welcome email. Normally the transfer is extremely fast and my experience is that it is almost instantly. But you might have to wait for 24 hours.

Adding the Domain to Hostgator
This step will only be required if you are adding an additional domain to your HostGator account. If you only have the primary one you bought with the account then you can skip this step.

You will need to login to your HostGator account. This is done by going to www.yourdomain.com/cpanel (change “yourdomain” to your actual domain and when you are asked for a username and password you must enter the ones that were sent to you by HostGator.

You will see a panel similar to this and you will need to click the Addon Domains button.

cPanel

Now all you need to do is enter New Domain Name, Username/directory/subdomain Name and Password. Then click “Add Domain”and you are done.

The next step will be to create the site and that is the fun part. Stay tuned for the next part where you will need to know some html to move on.

Spending Too Much Time Checking Your Adsense Account?

Adsense Real Time in Your BrowserI might be the only one doing this but it is a fact that I have spent way too much time checking in on my Adsense account to see how it went. Luckily I don’t have to do this anymore and neither do you. A guy called Allan Holman has developed a nice little add-on to Firefox that will show your Adsense account Real Time right in your browser.

I don’t know how much time it’ll save me but it will definitely be hours over time. So a big thanks to Allan.

Perfect Tool for Heatmaps and Confetti Graphics

Cool Tool for visitor trackingReading Adie’s post over at NetBusinessBlog let me to a script that I expect to be a valuable tool in the future of my blog.

With the name of CrazyEgg you’ll find a tool that comes in both a free and a paid version. I’ve just signed up for the free version as it lets you track up to 4 pages and 5,000 monthly visitors and that should be sufficient to see whether it will do what I expect it to.

The first reason that I have implemented it on my blog is that I really like graphs and statistics but secondly (and more importantly) this tool will help me track the movement of the blog visitors and thereby help me improve the layout. It will also help me place ads where they are most likely to be clicked and thereby helping me make more money. Will this tool be worth it? How can it not be as it is free, takes 3 minutes to implement and runs smoothly :)

I’ve always liked “free” and now I have a tool that will improve my earnings and therefore pay for itself in advance and I don’t even need to upgrade until I need it. I’ll be posting some updates once the tool has been running for some time.

Don’t Put All Your Eggs In One Basket (at HostGator)

If you are one of the many people that came by one of my sites yesterday, you were met with the following page…

Don't go down that route

Luckily I found out within a few hours because I went to make a post in one of my blogs. It came as a complete surprise to me and I went straight on to contact Hostgator’s live support chat. The problem wasn’t really that my blogs were down because they are still quite new and the daily visitor count is only about 100 and they aren’t making that much money yet.

The much larger problem was that I recently decided to move all my sites from different hosts that I was using to Hostgator as my preferred host. At the time it seemed like a really good idea and I were able to save a fair amount in hosting fees. But when my account was suspended (= all my sites were made unavailable) the deal was no longer in my favor.

Don't put them all in one basketI’m glad that I wasn’t on vacation somewhere on a tropical island and that I found out as fast as I did. Otherwise it could easily have cost me an amount equal to many years of hosting.

If you wonder why my account was suspended in the first place then it was because I had been using an article from an article directory to create an auto-generated site (all credits were naturally given) that I have and that particular article was apparently stolen from another site which felt that I was stepping on their toes. They had filed a complaint and Hostgator had sent me an email telling me to remove the articles. I did that immediately and wrote Hostgator back that it had been done. But somehow they managed to overlook that email and suspended my account (and thereby all my sites) as “I didn’t respond and comply”.

After spending 15 minutes trying to guide the support person to the response I had already sent, he finally apologized and removed the suspension. Phew…

The moral of the story could be never to use articles from article directories but the complaint could easily have been made for something completely different, so I don’t see that as the moral. The lesson I have learned is that even though it might save you a few dollars to have one hosting account hosting all your sites you might want to spread them over several accounts and even several hosts. Otherwise you might find that something as simple as a complaint might be a costly affair.

Do You Have Blogging Goals?

Setting goals is importantUnless you are an absolute newbie online marketer or a newbie/wannabe entrepreneur, you have probably heard it times and times again.

“You need to set goals and you must have a plan to achieve them.”

This is at least the essence of what it being taught by personal development coaches and almost all other successful internet marketer or offline entrepreneur.

But does this also apply to blogging? Well I guess it depends on what you want to do. A blog doesn’t have to become a business and if you are using your blog as a diary or a place to share family photos then you don’t have to spend that much time setting goals. That is unless you have committed yourself to write in your online diary every day or to post new family pictures every week. These things are goals as well and if you set them it is likelier for you to achieve them.

The reason that successful people, coaches and most other business minded people tells you to set goals is that it has been proven that if you set goals, focus and work on them, you change of actually achieving them increases dramatically. It seems logical to me but I have to admit that I can’t explain the psychological reason for it but then again, who needs to if you already know what it takes to reach your goals? It’s like the Nike slogan “Just Do It”.

Blogging Goals
If you are writing a blog in order to share your views with other people but at the same time create a small (or even a large) income along the way, then you need to set goals for your blog and after setting your goals you need a plan.

In a step by step process it’ll look like this:

1. Setup goals (quantify them and set a deadline)

2. Setup a plan on how to reach that goal (what it will require from you on a daily basis)

3. Work the plan consistently (don’t break you promise to yourself of working the plan) – Develop a “no matter what” attitude

4. Measure you achievements. Don’t just HOPE that you are on the right track. You must KNOW and if you are not then adjust and refine your plan and your actions

5. Celebrate when you reach you goal (reward yourself for a job well done)

6. Start again from point #1

Let me give you an example of how you can do this with your blog:

1. Goals for the blog

- Write 1 daily article about the blog’s topic. Minimum number of words 600. Must be done before 8pm (creating good content).

- Submit one 400 word article to Ezinearticles and GoArticles – Monday, Wednesday and Friday (linkbuilding).

- Comment on a minimum of 8 blogs per day. 2 of these blogs must be new to you (marketing your blog).

- Write 4 posts in an online forum within your niche (the niche of your blog) and remember to have a link to your blog in your post signature (marketing your blog).

- Think of one new way to make money of your blog each week + implement it if you find it to be a good idea.

- The goals are reached when: a) The daily amount of readers has grown with 300 people, b) The number of RSS readers has grown by 100 people and c) The monthly income has grown by $400.

2. The plan requires to keep a time schedule:

08.00-09.30: Write the daily article (1.5 hours)
09.30-10.30: Write and submit the article to article directories (1 hour)
10.30-12.30: Comment on 8 blogs (2 new) – requires reading + high quality comment (2 hours)
12.30-13.00: Lunch
13.00-14.00: Make 4 forum posts/replies – has to be high quality (1 hour)
14.00-15.00: Evaluate the day’s action and plan tomorrow (1 hour)

3. Creating a “no matter what” attitude takes time for most people and I encourage you to start on a personal development journey. Start reading some books, listen to personal development discs or attend seminars. The time and the money you spend will be so much worth it.

4. Once per week, once per month and once per year you must measure your achievements. How far did you go? Did you reach your goals? What was good and what was bad? Where do you need to improve and what did you do well? And remember to write it down for records. It will help you see that you have grown and expanded later on.

5. Go have a great dinner, Travel to some place you always wanted to go or Buy that new LCD Flat screen. Remember to reward yourself. It important to condition yourself so that your brain knows that hard consistent work equals pleasure when the job is done. It’ll motivate you to keep going.

6. You will probably begin to set new goals when you reach the once you have set up but do not skip point #5. Don’t just work, work, work… you NEED pleasure along the way in order not to burn out mentally.

Remember that the plan above is just an example of what you could do but I’m sure that if you followed the plan above for 4-6 months you would start seeing some great results. But you have to be CONSISTENT.

Actions must be taken every single day and if you know that there will be one day where you will have a hard time making it, then prepare and write all the articles in advance. You can even create your forum posts in advance. Don’t fall into the trap of “not making it today” but “wanting to make up for it tomorrow”. It is the ultimate “business killer” so don’t do it.

Wow… this was exactly 1,000 words but I hope that I have come across to you and that you will start using the things that makes sense to you. Good luck.

Do You Plan to Take Care of Your Parents?

Take care of your parentsI was very inspired by a post over at MyMoneyBlog about parent’s readiness for retirement. I have been thinking about this issue ever since I started thinking about my own retirement (I was about 21 years old at the time). I’m not the kind of guy that wants to ask my parents all kinds of questions about their financial situation as I feel it is their own business. I do however sometime worry about their financial plan for the future and whether or not they will be able to enjoy their retirement without having to worry about money.

There are several ways that we can help out our parents if we want to and the route that I am taking is the one where I plan to be financial independent before my 40th birthday and that will be around the time of my parent’s retirement. I don’t plan on retiring at that age but I like to idea of being able to. The freedom that it will provide will also make me capable of taking good care of my parents in case they are going to need my help.

If they don’t then that will just be great because instead of necessities I will be able to shower them with gifts and luxury. That would be much more fun for all of us for sure.

Free and Easy way to get additional targeted links

You may have noticed that Matt from BloggingFingers.com have launched an offer where he will exchange 2 links for one if you link to his one of his inner pages using the words “Web Hosting Packages“. I’ve decided to participate in this to help him reach his goal.

But you don’t have to stop there and I strongly suggest that you don’t. The fact is that because this offer require people to comment when they have linked back to his site you are actually getting a long list of people that are willing to link to other sites FOR FREE. That list is much more valuable than the links from Matt because instead of just 2 links you can now work on getting 20, 30 or 40 links from a wide selection of blogs.

All you need to do is find out what you will used those links for (you can even decide to make a post about it like Matt) and then you contact every single blogowner on the list and tell them that you are running a similar offer campaign and want to know whether they are interested in participating.

Do you think Matt is the only one that has tried this approach? If “no” then you have the option to search for an almost unlimited list of bloggers that are willing to link to your site in return for a link or 2.

Happy linkhunting :)

Use Your MBL Avatar to Attract More Visitors

Have you ever wondered what make you click on some avatars in the MyBlogLog lists and why there are others you never click? Something is definitely getting your attention and you can be sure that you are not the only one doing it.
Does this mean that you can attract visitors with a picture? It sure does and women have known it for years and I know for a fact that if the picture looks like a beautiful woman the likelihood of me clicking it is greatly increased.

But let me give you a few examples and tell you what I think of the three avatars that have recently visited my blog.

ThinkTechno

First one is from ThinkTechno.com and I honestly would not have clicked it if it weren’t for this post. Is it inspiring? No. Does it look like something that you find interesting? No. Do you become curious when you see it? No.
Could the person behind this picture get a better avatar and thereby get more visitors? Absolutely.

WrightHandBlogger

Next we have one that I really like and it is not because it is inspiring or looks like something that I find interesting but purely because I get curious. What is this colorful hand and why are the fingers in different colors? I must click to find out that it links to a blog called WrightHandBlogger.com. Nice avatar if you ask me.

Swimming Pool Man

Last but not least I took the picture from the guy behind the blog called something as difficult as http://myeasymoney.mybargaincity.info/. The reason I went for this avatar is solely because there were no pictures of beautiful women (bikini etc.) that had visited my blog recently. Will this picture get more clicks? I can’t answer for the female bloggers but I do think that some of them will be curious and click to see who this swimming pool guy is.

Have you ever thought of  how many visitors you miss out on because of your avatar?
